Growing Use of Electronic Banking

In Costa Rica in the past seven years the number of financial transactions carried out using digital banking almost doubled, going from 64 million in 2010 to 151 million in 2017.

From a statement issued by the Costa Rican Banking Association:

April 2018. The use of different digital banking channels offered by financial entities to Costa Ricans (Internet banking, mobile banking, telephone banking) which allow them to carry out transactions without having to visit the bank's offices, has seen steady growth in recent years. The Statistical Report on the National Payment System 2017, by the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR), confirms that the number of transactions went from 64.2 million in 2010 to 150.8 million in 2017.

"Financial entities have made a great effort to improve their services and adjust to the demands of the digital age, making available to customers a series of procedures on their websites and mobile applications with strict security rules, thus reducing the length of lines and the waiting times," said María Isabel Cortés, Executive Director of the Costa Rican Banking Association (ABC).

Luis Lara, manager of the Banco Industrial (BI) told Prensalibre.com that the institution expects amount of electronic transactions made by the end of 2011 to exceed those of 2010 when they totaled $1,377 million.

Guatemala: Telefonica Offers Services to Banks

The Large Business Division of Telefonica yesterday presented remote banking services to domestic banks for performing financial transactions through mobile phones, using a “cloud” computing platform.

Rudy Hoffens , manager in Guatemala for the large business division of the firm, said the pilot program will be implemented in Central America and will then be extended to Latin America.
