Growing Hotel Market

Hotel renovations and the opening of new establishments are planned next year in Guatemala, in a market where the occupancy rate is around 60%.

Despite the fact that the occupancy rate has not exceeded 60% in the last two years, growth of the hotel market in Guatemala continues, especially in the metropolitan area. In this location, the areas of greatest demand continue to be those near the road to El Salvador, Cayalá and the sector near La Reforma Avenue.

Elperiodico.com.gt reports that "...The arrival of LATAM Reforma is on the horizon, this is a modern complex which will be built on the 13th street of zone 9. This chain opened a five-star hotel this year in May and operates the Hyatt Centric ... with 138 rooms."

"... The hotel sector is also awaiting confirmation of the arrival of the Hard Rock Hotel chain in 2018.  Last month the Hard Rock Café located in zone 10 closed its doors announcing a relocation process.  Although the chain's intention to open a hotel in the country was known, the plans need to be confirmed. In a preliminary way it was mentioned that the hotel would be located in the Zona Viva Forum complex that is being built in the 3rd. avenue and 10a, in zone 10 and will offer 175 rooms, but at the moment Hard Rock Hotel's promotion in the area is focusing on the new Papagayo hotels in Costa Rica and other destinations in Mexico."

"... Up to March, 3,099 hotels, bed and breakfast establishments and other types of accommodation were counted. The supply of rooms in 983 hotels was accounted for in 21,922 and beds-spaces, around 66,000, and in bed and breakfasts pensions the supply of rooms was 3,710 and in other lodgings, 25,803."

The hotel to be built in Guatemala City will have 160 rooms and will operate under the brand Marriott Hotel, while the second hotel will have 115 rooms and will be of the brand AC Hotel. Both facilities will be built by Cayalá Group and operated by Marriott International Corporation.

The hotel chain is to build a new premises and two existing ones are to be renamed to join the chain, meaning that there will be seven hotels in the canal country.

The economic boom around the Canal expansion and the expected arrival of more leisure and business tourists with high purchasing power, has attracted the attention of the multinational chain Marriott, which will soon have 7 hotels in Panama.
