Good Year for Food and Beverage Business

Partially explained by the development of new products, during 2018 the exports of the sector in Guatemala reached nearly $1.8 billion, 3% more than what was reported in 2017.

2018 was the year of the diversification of the exportable offer of the Food and Beverage Sector of AGEXPORT.  The Guatemalan SMEs of this industry pointed to the development of new products seeking to meet global consumer trends.  This was important for a 2018 estimate in closing exports of this sector by US$ 1,780 million, according to the export union.

On the other hand, the Coordinator of the Food and Beverage Commission of AGEXPORT, Jennifer Mendoza, explained that "... The member companies of the Food and Beverage Commission of AGEXPORT developed products in accordance with the trends of healthy and sustainable food, as well as the current pace of consumers' lives. The companies innovated with products such as encapsulated coffee, collagen gummies, seed snacks, nutritional prepared beverages, pancake formulas, among others. It is important to note that one of the most significant markets for the sector is Central America, a region that consumes 50% of total Guatemalan food and beverage exports. The main products exported to that destination are: edible fats and oils, beverages, alcoholic beverages and vinegars, cereal-based preparations, meat-based preparations, fish, crustaceans and mollusks, fruit preparations, sweeteners and confectionery."

In the context of market diversification and growth sought by the sector in exports during 2018, companies in the sector attended international events such as Expo Walmart in Costa Rica, Expo Antad in Mexico, Kaoshiung Fair in Taiwan, in addition to trade missions where Guatemalan businessmen knew the opportunities offered by the markets of Panama, the United States and Germany, details the statement.

Central America purchased one third of total sales generated by the industry in 2015, which was worth $980 million.

In 2015, the Food and Beverage Commission at AGEXPORT saw exports close at more than $980.5 million, with a sustained growth of 3% compared to 2014.

International Fair for Food and Beverages Announced

In Guatemala producers and distributors of food and drinks are invited to be part of the group of companies participating in Expo ANTAD 2015, an event to be held in Mexico.

From a statement issued by the Guatemalan Exporters Association (AGEXPORT):

The Department of Trade Promotion at AGEXPORT is inviting companies in the food and beverage sector to participate, on 18 to 20 March, in the leading event in Latin America for the retail sector, ANTAD Expo 2015 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
