Gold: Exports increase 11%

The value of gold exported from Central America in the first three months of the year reached $132 million, 11% more than the value reported for the same period in 2017.

Exports by country
From January to March 2018, the main exporter was Nicaragua with $96 million, followed by Honduras with $27 million and Costa Rica with $9 million. Guatemala, Panama and El Salvador did not report significant exports.

Variation in regional exports
Between the first quarter of 2017 and the same period of 2018 the value of gold exported from Central America reported an increase of 11%, from $118 million to $132 million.

The volume exported increased by 353% during the periods in question, from 68 tons to 306 tones.

Destination of exports
During the first three months of the year, almost all of the value exported from Central America was destined for the U.S. and a minimal amount for the Netherlands.

However, Canada bought more than half of Central America's gold exports in the first quarter of 2012 and 2013, in 2014 it bought 37%, and between 2015 and 2018 its purchases declined until they disappeared.

Exports of metalliferous minerals from Central America summed $33 million from January to March 2018, and sales to Belgium increased 229% compared to the same period in 2017.

Central America No Longer Exports Gold to Canada

September 2017

In 2012 gold exports to Canada amounted to $377 million, equivalent to 54% of the total exported by the region that year, but four years later the figure has fallen to 0.
