From a statement issued by the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promotion Office :

The GLOBALG.AP Board recently announced the introduction of an update to version 5 of its food safety standard Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) for crops and aquaculture. This comes after a routine four-year cycle of continuous improvement that resulted in the most comprehensive change of this regulation to the date. It is expected that there will be a direct and significant effect on the 150,000 producers throughout the world that have GLOBALG.AP certification

The new version is optionally immediately applicable together with the current Version 4 and will be mandatory for all new and rectified audits from July 1, 2016. The biggest overhaul in the history of GLOBALG.AP now includes among other aspects, certain government requirements, such as compliance with the standards proposed by the FDA, in addition to the food safety law of the EU. This, again, highlights the fact that although GLOBALG.AP is a private standard, it strives to incorporate public or governmental guidelines and respond to new trends and threats presented in the horticultural, aquaculture and raw materials sectors. In particular, the update also addresses the problem of microbial risks.
