Glass: Regional Purchases Trend Downward

After in 2018 imports of glass and glass manufactures in Central America reported a slight decrease of 1% compared to 2017, in the first quarter of 2019 reported a 4% year-on-year decline.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to March of this year, the main importer in Central America was Guatemala, with $19 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $17 million, Panama, with $14 million, Honduras, with $12 million, El Salvador, with $10 million and Nicaragua, with $4 million.

Main Suppliers
In the first quarter, 29% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 10% from Mexico, 9% from the US and 3% from Spain.

China is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the period concerned in recent years, since in 2012 represented 18% of the total value imported by the region and in 2019 reached 29%.

Variation of the Regional Business
Between the first quarter of 2018 and the same period of 2019, the volume imported of glass and its manufactures registered a 9% decrease, falling from 91 thousand tons to 83 thousand tons.

On the other hand, for the periods in question the imported value registered a 4% decrease, from $79 million to $76 million.

During the first half of the year, imports of glass and glass products in Central America reached $155 million, an increase of 3% compared to the same period in 2017.
