Glass: Purchases to China Grow at 6%

From January to September 2019, imports of glass and its manufactures in Central America reached $220 million, and purchases from companies in China grew by 6% over the same period in 2018.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to September last year the main importer in Central America was Guatemala, with $57 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $53 million, Panama, with $38 million, El Salvador, with $30 million, Honduras, with $29 million and Nicaragua, with $12 million.

Main Suppliers
In the first nine months of 2019, 31% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 13% from the USA, 11% from Mexico and 3% from Colombia.

China is the market of origin of the imports that has grown the most for the period in question in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 17% of the total value imported by the region and in 2019 it reached 31%.

Variation in Regional Business
Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, the volume of glass and glass products imported rose by 13%, from 252,000 tons to 284,000 tons.

On the other hand, for the periods in question, the value imported registered a 2% decrease, from $224 million to $220 million.

During the first half of the year, imports of glass and glass products in Central America reached $155 million, an increase of 3% compared to the same period in 2017.

El Salvador Imports More Glass

August 2018

In the first quarter of 2018, companies in the country imported $12 million worth of glass and its manufactures, 36% more than in the same period in 2017.
