Glass: Imports Increase 3%

During the first half of the year, imports of glass and glass products in Central America reached $155 million, an increase of 3% compared to the same period in 2017.

Imports by country
The main importer in Central America in the first half of 2018 was Guatemala, with $39 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $31 million, Panama, with $28 million, El Salvador, with $24 million, Honduras, with $22 million and Nicaragua, with $12 million.

Origin of imports
From January to June of this year, 28% of the value imported from Central America was from China, 14% from the U.S., 11% from Mexico and 4% from Colombia.

The Asian country is the origin market of imports that has grown the most in the first half of recent years, since in 2012 represented 17% of the total value imported from the region and in 2018 reached 28%.

Variation in regional imports
Between the first semester of 2017 and the same period of 2018, the volume imported of glass and its products registered a decrease of 12%, falling from 193 thousand tons to 171 thousand tons.

For the periods in question, the value imported increased by 3%, from $150 million in 2017 to $155 million in 2018.

In the first nine months of the year, imports of glass and its manufactures in Central America totaled $224 million, and 43% were bought by companies in Guatemala and Costa Rica.
