Germany to Provide $30 Million for Projects in Nicaragua

In 2009, Germany will maintain aid to Nicaragua and focus on water, the environment and governance.

The German ambassador in Managua, Betina Kern, signed a $1.5 million agreement yesterday to rehabilitate technical education institutes.

During the signing of the agreement, the diplomat indicated that aid to Nicaragua which in recent years has averaged $30 million will be maintained in 2009.

In an article published in, it is reported that the ambassador said, "One of the major projects carried out in the cooperation framework was the construction of a sewage treatment plant to clean the capital's Xolotlan Lake. The recently opened project cost $85 million, of which $36 million were donated by Germany."

Taiwan Gives Nicaragua A Stadium

Both governments have agreed to build a baseball stadium for 30,000 spectators with an investment of $30 million from Taiwan plus another $5 million from Nicaragua.

"This week the honourable Ambassador of China Taiwan in Nicaragua, Ingrid Hsing and me will be signing the draft, which sets out additional conditions to the memorandum of understanding signed between the Foreign Minister of Nicaragua and the Taiwanese Chancellor," said Marlos Torres, director of the Nicaraguan Institute of Sports (IND).

The announcement was made by Karl-Heinz Rode, German Ambassador in Honduras, who explained that his country will resume aid to Honduras after a bilateral meeting in Tegucigalpa, on April 25.

45 Projects Paralyzed by Political Crisis

$684 million in projects are on hold in Honduras, due to IDB and WB freezing financial cooperation with the country.

38 projects are awaiting $456.7 million in funding from the Inter-American Development Bank. Likewise, the World Bank has 17 active projects, with $227.4 million to be disbursed.

$20 Million for Water and Sanitation Projects

The German Embassy in Nicaragua assured the country it will finance the projects to supply water to Granada and prevent the pollution of Lake Nicaragua.

Resources for the "Improvement and application of water and sewage for the city of Granada” will be provided by the German government, as was confirmed by the German Embassador in Nicaragua, Betina Kern.
