Geothermal Project in Guatemala

The Energy Ministry of Guatemala has authorized Enel to perform the necessary studies for the installation of a Thermal Generating station in Totonicapán.

Enel of Guatemala has received an endorsement from the Ministry of Energy and Mines to conduct exploratory studies and measurements for the generation, transmission and distribution of energy, for the installation of a Geothermal Generating station in Totonicapan.

"The generator called PALA, will be located in Momostenango, Santa Maria Chiquimula, San Bartolo Aguas Calientes, San Francisco el Alto and the head of the department."

The temporary authorization goes into effect this March 5, provides that where the activities causing damage to property owners or holders of the company must compensate.

"The authorization will not be limited meaning that another party can request temporary authorization for the same area."

Push for Geothermal Power Generation

As a way of diversifying the energy matrix the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) is promoting projects for geothermal power generation.

In the country, 78% of energy is generated from sources which are affected by changes in weather conditions.

The regulator has granted a temporary license for the exploration of the geothermal energy projects known as "Gloria" and "La Chinita".

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), via the Ministerial Agreements 129-2011 and 157-2011, is providing a temporary license for one year for geothermal exploration, to the company Gulf Resources, SA.

Guatemala Authorizes 100km2 Geothermal Power Plant

In a 100 square kilometer terrain, company U.S. Geothermal Guatemala will build a geothermal power generation plant.

It was recently authorized by the Energy and Mines Ministry, and will be located in El Ceibillo, Amatitlán.

Newspaper Prensa Libre explained that the authorization lasts for 30 years from the date it is published in the official government newspaper (“Diario de Centroamérica”).

$20 Million for Nicaraguan Geothermal Power Plant

Ram Power Corporation and Polaris Energy Nicaragua secured a loan from CABEI to enlarge San Jacinto Tizate geothermal power plant.

With these $20 million from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, the Canadian companies have complete the $77 million funding required for expanding the power plant.
