Gas Plant to Start Operations in July 2022

In El Salvador, the initial plan was that the new Energia del Pacifico power plant would begin operations in early 2022; however, it is currently projected to begin operations until July 1 of next year.

The project located in the Acajutla port area, which will have an installed capacity of 378 megawatts and began construction in 2015, will be delayed a few months.

Elmundo.sv reviews that "... the new Energia del Pacifico (EDP) power generator will start operations until July 1, 2022, some six months later than initially projected."

The article explains that "... the (private) work consists of a 'combined cycle' plant, a marine terminal for reception, storage and regasification of LNG, a fuel that will displace the generators that inject electricity from the combustion of bunker fuel."

It is estimated that this new plant will supply 30% of El Salvador's electricity demand.

The Costarican Institute of Electricity delivered the Las Pailas II Geothermal Plant located in Curubandé, Guanacaste province, at a $366 million cost.

According to projections, the work became more expensive and was delivered months late, since the 2016-2035 Generation Expansion Plan specifies that the plant had an initial cost of $335 million and was to begin operations in January 2019.

A design has been presented for a power generating plant of 355 MW based on natural gas to be constructed in Acajutla and which will begin operating in 2018.

The project, to be developed in Acajutla, Sonsonate department also includes the construction of a floating storage tank, another ground storage tank, a spring, a generating power plant and associated transmission line.

The system will be tested in October and in December steam from the plant’s wells will generate 36 MW which will be delivered to Nicaragua’s electrical system.

Executives from the company, Polaris Energy, responsible for the project, said that tests will start in October and in December the plant will be directly connected to the National Interconnected System (SIN in Spanish).
