Gas Pipeline from Mexico Just Starting Initial Stages

At the First Meeting of the Working Group on Gas Interconnection between Mexico and Guatemala it was agreed to boost the studies that will support an eventual pipeline in the Southeast region of Mexico and its extension to Central America.

Although as early as May of this year the government of Guatemala announced the signing of an agreement containing the project details, it is only now that Mexico has officially announced agreements to provide "specific working groups for further analysis on the issues of quantification of current and future demand in Guatemala and in the regional market as well as on the regulatory, financial and commercial, budgetary, and natural gasnaspects."

From a statement issued by the Ministry of Energy of Mexico:

Mexico and Guatemala in close collaboration in energy projects which support the development of the region.

The delegations discussed the scope of a proposed transport infrastructure for Natural Gas from Mexico extending to Central America.

In order to strengthen and enhance energy cooperation for the establishment of projects which promote economic development, and provide social and environmental benefits for the people of both countries, the First Meeting of the Working Group on Gas Interconnection between Mexico and Guatemala was held.

Honduras to Join Mexico-Guatemala Pipeline

President Hernández announced that the country will join an ambitious project which for now has not transcended the good but vague intentions of the Mexican government.

The president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez, announced in Guatemala City that his country will join the pipeline project, whose construction is the result of a bilateral agreement between Guatemala and Mexico.

Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has put forward a scenario in which includes gas produced by Mexico and the gas imported from the US.

Central America Gas Pipeline Project Resurfaces

The Mexican government is considering constructing a pipeline and eventually a refinery to supply the region.

Miguel Hakim, Mexican Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, said his country is considering building a refinery and natural gas pipeline which would cross the isthmus and would be an alternative option for generating power at low cost. Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), has $2 billion to invest.

IDB to Support Pipeline Between Guatemala and Mexico

The Inter-American Development Bank has expressed interest in funding the feasibility studies for a gas pipeline between Guatemala and Mexico.

President Otto Perez Molina told a press conference in New York that executives from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) expressed interest in funding feasibility studies for a gas pipeline between Guatemala and Mexico.
