Fyffes Invests $8 Million in Panama

Fyffes, a European company, bought Panamanian pineapple producer, Agro-industrials Golden West SA for $8 million.

With the purchase, estimated at $8 million, Fyffes acquired 450 hectares and the assets of Agro-industrials Golden West SA. The European company also has pineapple production properties in Costa Rica, and it hopes that the combined production from both countries will reach 50% of pineapples sold in 2010.

Fyffes chairman David McCann said: "This acquisition is an important step to enhance and ensure the provision and quality of our Fyffes Gold Pineapples. The future integration of production, shipping and marketing is a positive development for Fyffes and its customers."

In 2015 Costa Rica continued to lead the export of fresh and dried pineapples with $822 million, followed by Honduras, with $26 million and Panama, with $22 million.

Figures on the Pineapple market in Central America, compiled by the Business Intelligence Unit at CentralAmericaData.com, show that in 2015 the countries of Central America exported a combined total of 2 million 13 thousand tons of fresh or dried pineapple, equivalent in value to $871 million.

Panama: Agricultural Export Sector Requires $21 Million

This is the investment required to increase exports of melon and watermelon, said Edwin Pérez, president of the Union of Agricultural Exporters.

April recorded drops of 68.8% in melon exports and of 53.4% for watermelon, when compared to the same period of 2008, according to figures from the General Comptroller of the Republic.
