Furniture in Central America: Purchases Fall 29%

In the first half of 2020, imports of home and office furniture in the region's countries amounted to $125 million, 29% less than in the same period in 2019.

Costa Rican and Panamanian Companies: Main Buyers
In the first six months of 2020 the main importers of furniture in Central America were Costa Rica, with $38 million, followed by Panama, with $30 million, Guatemala, with $22 million, El Salvador, with $16 million, Honduras with $12 million and Nicaragua, with $8 million.

All markets in the region registered year-on-year declines in purchases. In El Salvador, imports fell by 12%, while in Costa Rica and Guatemala they fell by 13% and 14%, respectively.

Nicaragua, Honduras and Panama reported variations of -15%, -30% and -50%, respectively.

Main Furniture Suppliers
From January to June, 28% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 20% from the USA, 5% from Italy, 5% from Brazil, 4% from Mexico and 4% from Colombia.

For the period in question of the last eight years, China is the country of origin of the imports that have grown the most, since in 2012 it represented 19% of the total value purchased, and in 2020 it rose to 28%.

Regional Imports Down
Between the first six months of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported into the region reported a 29% drop, from $175 million to $125 million.

From January to March 2020, imports of home and office furniture in the countries of the region totaled $81 million, with Guatemalan and Costa Rican companies accounting for 44% of the total.

Central America Buys More Italian Furniture

March 2019

In the first nine months of 2018, imports of home and office furniture in Central American countries totaled $270 million, and purchases from companies in Italy grew 19% over the same period in 2017.
