Fruit Juices: Regional Purchases Recover

During the second quarter of 2021, imports of fruit and vegetable juices in Central America recovered by 18% equivalent to 88 thousand tons, representing $68 million, coming from Guatemala as the main supplier.

Regional Purchases Up
Between the second quarter of 2020 and the same period of 2021, the imported value of fruit and vegetable juices in Central America registered a 21% increase, going from $56 million to $68 million.

For the periods in question, the volume purchased abroad increased by 18%, reaching 88,914 tons of fruit and vegetable juices.

Panama, Main Central American buyer
For the second quarter of 2021, the main importer in Central America continued to be Panama with $13 million, followed by El Salvador and Honduras with $11 million, Costa Rica with $9 million, Guatemala with $7 million and Nicaragua with $6 million.

Regarding the year-on-year variation of purchases, for the period in question, all Central American markets increased their purchases. El Salvador increased by 34.44%, Costa Rica by 23.53%, Honduras by 27.07%, Nicaragua by 8.84% and Panama by 22.73%. Only Guatemala reduced its imports by 2.29%.

Guatemala, Largest Juice Supplier
For the first half of last year, 23% of the value imported from Central America came from Guatemala, 17% from the USA, 7% from Mexico and 6% from Brazil.

For the months under analysis in recent years Brazil has been the market of origin of imports that has grown the most, given that in 2012 it represented 1.91% of total Central American purchases and in the second quarter of 2021 that proportion reached 5.78%.
