Frozen Shrimp: Sales to Taiwan Upward

From January to March 2020, companies from Central American countries exported frozen shrimp and prawns for $60 million, and sales to Taiwan grew by 56% compared to the same period in 2019.

Regional Sales, with a Slight Rise
Between the first quarter of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the export value of frozen shrimp and prawns registered a 2% increase, from $58.8 million to $60.2 million.

Regarding the performance of regional sales in general, exports to Taiwan also increased for the periods in question, rising from $9 million to $15 million.

Exports by Country
As of March 2020, the main exporter of frozen shrimp and prawns in Central America continued to be Honduras, with $47 million, followed by Nicaragua with $7 million, Panama with $4 million, Costa Rica with $1.3 million and Guatemala with $600,000.

For the period in question, the sales of Panamanian and Nicaraguan companies increased 45% and 12%, respectively. Costa Rican exports decreased by 51% and in the case of Honduras, there were no significant variations.

Destination of Exports
In the first quarter of 2020, 24% of the value exported from Central America was destined for Taiwan, 24% for the United Kingdom, 10% for the USA, 10% for Germany, 8% for Mexico and 5% for the Netherlands.

Price of Exports
Between January 2012 and June 2019, the average price per kilo for exports of frozen shrimp and prawns by countries in the region ranged from $9.17 to $4.74.

Nicaragua: Sales Figures for Frozen Shrimp

August 2018

In the first quarter of the year, companies in the country exported $32 million worth of frozen shrimp and langoustine, registering a 64% increase with respect to exports in the same period in 2017.
