Frozen Shrimp: More Business with UK

From January to March 2019, companies from Central American countries exported frozen shrimp and prawns for $59 million, and sales to the United Kingdom grew 39% over the same period in 2018.

Regional Sales Downward
Between the first quarter of 2018 and the same period of 2019, the exported volume of frozen shrimp and prawns registered a 39% decrease, falling from 14,512 tons to 8,925 tons.

For the periods in question, the value exported also decreased, in this case the decline was 35%, going from $90 million to $59 million.

In contrast to the behavior of regional sales in general, exports to the United Kingdom increased for these periods, increasing from $8.6 million to $12 million.

Exports by Country
Up to March 2019, the main exporter of frozen shrimp and prawns in Central America continued to be Honduras, with $47 million, followed by Nicaragua, with $6 million, Panama, with $3 million and Costa Rica, with $2.7 million.

Destination of Exports
In the first quarter of 2019, 20% of the value exported from Central America went to the United Kingdom, 16% Taiwan, 15% USA, 9% Mexico and 8% Germany.

Price of Exports
Between January 2012 and December 2018, the average price per kilo of frozen shrimp and shrimp exports by countries in the region ranged from $9.17 to $4.74.

In the first quarter of the year, Central American countries exported $90 million worth of frozen shrimp and langoustine, which is 76% more than in the same period in 2017, mainly due to sales to the US and Taiwan.
