Exports by Country
During 2020, Costa Rica was the main exporter of frozen fruit in the region, with $167 million. It was followed by Guatemala with $43 million and El Salvador with $9 million. Panama, Nicaragua and Honduras did not register significant exports.

In 2020, Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica increased their sales in year-on-year terms by 164%, 27% and 10%, respectively.

Exports, Slightly Up
Between 2019 and 2020, the value of frozen fruit exports grew by 29%, from $96 million to $124 million. In the case of the volume sold, it is reported that for the periods in question increased from 82,173 tons in 2019 to 89,850 tons in 2020, which is equivalent to a variation of 9%.

Export Destination
From January to June 2020, 63% of the value exported from Central America was destined for the USA, 7% for Canada, 5% for Belgium, 4% for the United Kingdom, 4% for Germany and 3% for Chile.

The U.S. is the destination market for Central American sales that has grown the most for the period of analysis in recent years, going from 55% of the total in 2012 to 65% in 2020.

Export Prices
In recent years, the average price of Central American sales has been on an upward trend, rising from $1.04 to $1.45 per kilo between August 2019 and June 2020, a 39% increase.

In recent years the downward trend in the average price of regional frozen fruit exports has not been reversed, as between June 2016 and September 2019 it fell from $1.60 to $1.14 per kilo.

Sales of Frozen Fruit Fell 11%

December 2018

In the first half of the year, countries in the region exported $51 million in frozen fruit, 11% less than in the same period in 2017.

Watermelon Exports Up 20%

August 2018

During the first three months of the year countries in Central America sold $52 million worth of watermelons abroad, which is 20% more than what was exported in the same period in 2017.
