Fridges: Purchases from Mexico grow at 6%

During the first half of 2019, Central American companies imported $200 million in fridges and freezers, and purchases from companies in Mexico grew 6% over the same period in 2018.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to June the main importer was Guatemala, with $55 million, followed by Panama, with $39 million, Costa Rica and Honduras, with $36 million each, El Salvador, with $26 million and Nicaragua, with $9 million.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between the first half of 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value imported into the region increased 5%, from $190 million to $200 million.

For the periods in question, purchases from Mexican companies grew 6%, rising from $60 million to $64 million.

Top Sellers
In the first six months of the year, 32% of the value imported from Central America came from Mexico, 27% from China, 16% from the U.S. and 8% from Colombia.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question of the last eight years, as in 2012 represented 7% of total value purchased, and by 2019 that proportion rose to 27%.

Remark:
The equipment included in this analysis are fridges and freezers for domestic and industrial use, cabinets, chests, showcases and cold production furniture, horizontal and vertical freezers such as ark or wardrobe and other machines or appliances for the production of cold. Air conditioning equipment is not included in the figures in the report.
