Forum on Maritime and Logistics Trade

On July 19 shipping companies, logistics and other sectors related to the port industry will be meeting in Panama to discuss issues and opportunities arising from the expanded canal.

The event, organized by the Maritime Authority of Panama, will be held at the Hotel Intercontinental Miramar, from 1 pm.

Anpanama.com reports that "....Among the topics to be discussed are: prospects for Panama's logistics sector after enlargement, adaptation and efficient management of Panamanian ports and the role of private enterprise in the new scenario, among other things."

Traffic in Panama's Ports Down 10%

The Panamanian port system saw a decrease from 2,325,000 TEUs in the first quarter of 2012 to 2,079,000 TEUs in the same period of 2013.

"The decline in container cargo movement is attributed to the economic crisis in Europe and the U.S., as well as the fall in trade between the largest South American economies: Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil," noted an article in Prensa.com .

The Maritime Industry Impacted by the Crisis

Compared to the 2007 record of 8 billion tons in transports, global maritime commerce fell substantially in 2008, dragged down by the crisis.

A good indication of this is the decrease in the Baltic Dry Index, which is composed of the prices of the maritime transportation of dry cargo.
