Footwear: Trade in Central America

Imports by country 
During the first quarter of 2018 the main buyer of footwear and parts in Central America was Panama, with $52 million, followed by Guatemala, with $39 million, Costa Rica, with $28 million, El Salvador, with $20 million, Honduras, with $17 million and Nicaragua, with $13 million. 

Variation of regional imports 
Between the first three months of 2017 and the same period in 2018 the value imported into the region fell by 2%, decreasing from $172 million to $168 million.

For the periods in question, imports from Vietnam and Brazil increased by 14% and 4%, respectively, as purchases in the Asian country increased from $6 million to $7 million, and from the South American country from $5.1 million to $5.2 millions.

Origin of imports 
From January to March 2018, 32% of the value imported into the region came from China, 7% from the US, 4% from Mexico and 4% from Vietnam.

Between January and September 2018, Central American countries imported $486 million in footwear and footwear parts, and purchases from Brazil increased 11% over the same period in 2017.
