Food and transport spearhead 13.56 percent increase in Guatemalan inflation

Inflation in Guatemala over the last 12-month period reached 13.56 percent in June, the National Statistics Institute reported.

Cumulative inflation for the first half of the year came to 7.54 percent, compared with the 7 percent target for the whole year that was set by the Monetary Board.
Twelve-month inflation in transport and communications reached 20.75 percent in June, while food and beverages came to 18.93 percent. Food and beverages represent 38.75 of household expenditure in Guatemala.

The consumer price index varied by 0.37% in June compared to May, placing accumulated inflation in the year at 1.08%.

From a report by the National Statistics Institute:

Monthly variation recorded in June 2015 stood at 0.37%, which shows an acceleration in the price level of 0.17 from the previous month (0.20%). In relation to the level reached in June 2014 (0.53%) it dropped by 0.16.

The National Institute of Statistics and Census has reported the main results of the Consumer Price Index of June 2011.

Guatemala: Inflation Reaches 5.25% in November

Inflation closed last month at the highest level of the year: 5.25%.

According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), the main increases were recorded in the food and beverages sector compared to October, which rose 1.51%, followed by health care costs with a monthly change of 0.52%.

Guatemala mulls its economic situation

The president of the Guatemala's Central Bank, María Antonieta de Bonilla, is worried about the current economic situation in hre country and predicts the coming of stricter credit conditions.

Del Bonilla made her comments in an interview with the newspaper Prensa Libre, following an announcement by the National Statistics Institute that reported an annual inflation rate of 13.56 percent in June, far above this year's goal of 5.5 percent plus or minus 1.5 percent.
