Food and Beverages Push Up Inflation

During July in Costa Rica, the Consumer Price Index reported a 2.9% year-on-year variation, a rise that is partly explained by the behavior of food and non-alcoholic beverage prices.

Of the 315 goods and services that make up the consumption basket, 61% increased in price, 35% decreased in price and 4% showed no variation, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses.

The report states that "... During July, the goods and services that showed the greatest positive effect are: tomato, onion and potato. On the other hand, gasoline, automobile and diesel were among the main ones with the greatest negative effect.

In July 2019, of the twelve groups that make up the index, eight presented price increases.

In July of the last ten years, the highest year-on-year variation was presented in 2013 with 5.81%, while in 2015 the only negative year-on-year variation was registered (-0.32%).
