Food: Opportunities in Portugal

The European country represents a market of 10 million inhabitants and its per capita expenditure on fruits and vegetables reaches $500 million per year, one of the highest in this category.

Procomer Costa Rica's "Fresh and Processed Foods in Portugal" study shows that in 2018, food spending in Portugal, including alcoholic beverages, reached $3,132 per capita, 20% of total consumption spending.

The report states that "... The largest spending on food goes to meat (18%) and alcoholic beverages (16%). 16% of total spending went to fruits and vegetables and these have shown a 4% average annual growth in the last 5 years. In addition, Portugal is among the group of countries with the highest proportion of spending on fruits and vegetables compared to other European countries.

Imports of fresh vegetables reached 484 million USD and these have been increasing up to a 5% annual average. Spain is one of the strongest suppliers with a 59% participation, however, Costa Rica is positioned as the 11th supplier of this type of products, and with a strong dynamism up to 116% in the last 5 years.

Opportunities in the Arab country have been announced for chutneys, organic coffee, pastries, organic tuna, dried fruits, plants, flowers and foliage.

The Foreign Trade Promotion Office (PROCOMER) has opened a trade promotion office in Qatar. Alvaro Stone, director of Exports at the office, informed Nacion.com that an official has been based in the premises of the Embassy of Costa Rica in that country since late last year.
