Food: Business Between Central America and Mexico

From January to November 2017, Central American countries imported 19,000 tons of food supplies from Mexico, 10% more than the amount purchased in the same period in 2016.

Variation of regional imports 
Between January and November of 2017, the import value of food preparation ingredients brought from Mexico into Central America decreased by 11% compared to the same period in 2016, going from $80 million to $71 million. This fall is explained by a reduction registered in the average price of imports.  

During the periods in question, the import volume increased by 10%, going from 17 thousand tons in 2016 to 19 thousand tons in 2017.

Imports by country 
From January to November of last year, the main buyers of food preparation supplies from companies in Mexico were Guatemala and Costa Rica, with $20 million each, followed by Nicaragua, with $10 million, El Salvador, with $9 million, Honduras, with $7 million and Panama, with $6 million.

Price of imports 
In recent years the average price of imports from Mexico has been trending downwards. Between December 2013 and November of last year, the average price per kilo went down from $6.16 to $3.75.

In the first semester of 2017, Central American countries imported $17 million worth of sauces and their preparations from Mexico, 11% less than in the same period in 2016.
