First Road Section in El Salvador Costs $29.9 million

The contract with Constructora Meco for the construction of the first 13.4 kilometers and improvement of the other 9.5 kilometers of the Longitudinal Road North was signed.

Construction and upgrading of the 22 kilometers between Metapán and Santa Rosa Guachipilín, called Section 2A, will take 18 months and it will generate 300 direct jobs. It includes construction of two vehicular bridges one 150 meters long and the other 32 meters long.

According to, Meco regional manager, Dennis Monge, said: "In reality, the beginning of the project starts with this signature because we must generate all the logistics, equipment mobilization, and staff recruitment, ... but a group of our people is on the project beginning today, seeing to these kinds of things in order to adequately respond to needs, and to be able to meet the schedule."

The contract for the construction of the second section of the road, which goes all the way to Nueva Concepción, will be signed in the next two weeks.

Yesterday, Fomilenio awarded Constructoa Meco a contract to build a 30 kilometer stretch, from Ciudad Barrios to Cacaopera.

The Millenium Challenge Account committed to contribute $233 million for this road. Up to now, the entity has awarded contracts for $107 million, the last being the one awarded yesterday to Meco for $23.4 million.

Meco To Build Highway Stretch in El Salvador

Company Meco was awarded a $23.04 million contract to build a stretch of the highway known as “Carretera Longitudinal del Norte” (CLN).

This stretch, 30.4 kilometers long, runs from Cuidad Barrios up to Osicala, in San Miguel, and from Delicias, Concepción to Cacaopera in Morazán.

Improvements to the 13.4 kilometers of the 2B2 section of the Longitudinal Road North were awarded by FOMILENIO (Millennium Fund) to the MNV Gaskpital Consortium.

The article by reported that José Ángel Quirós, director of FOMILENIO, said: "We hope to sign the contract with the company in the next two weeks, and we believe it will be completed before the first leg since this one is shorter."

The bidding for the second section (13.4 km) of the Longitudinal Highway North was opened.

There were six companies that made bids: MNV S.A. Gaskapital GRSA Consortium, the Italian company ASTALDI S.p.A., Constructora Santa Fe, Meco, CPK Consultores and SBI International Holding.
