Central America - EU Association Agreement Ready for Signing

The AACUE now must be approved by the legislatures of the countries involved.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Trade in Costa Rica (COMEX) reads:

Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union ready for signing

San Jose, June 25, 2012. Today the Council of Ministers of the European Union authorized the signing of the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union (EU-CAAA) on Friday June 29 in Honduras. The Ministers of Foreign Trade and the Foreign Ministers of the region will sign the document, along with the Trade Commissioner of the European Union and the Danish Foreign Minister, in a formal ceremony under the framework of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of member countries of the System for Central American Integration (SICA).

"The signing of the Partnership Agreement is an important step in the process of bringing Central America and the European Union closer together. ACCUE will fuel trade and investment relations between Central American countries and the old continent, as it provides a framework for institutional strengthening of the region, improving the business climate and building new opportunities for trade, investment and employment", explained the Minister of Foreign Trade, Anabel Gonzalez.

European Commission Approves FTA with Central America

The European Commission has reviewed and approved an association agreement between Central America and the European Union. This is the first step in a process which should result in the agreement being signed.

According to the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Trade’s press release, the process now moves to the Council of the European Union, a body composed of member countries, which must review and sign the legal compliance agreement.

Nacion.com reports: "The Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Trade, Marco Vinicio Ruiz, did not provide details on the European proposal as they are still in negotiations and the Isthmus has to respond this week.
