Financial and Services Sector Boosts Economy

Mainly because of the economic activity reported in the financial and services sector, during February the IMAE in Honduras grew 3.7% with respect to the same month in 2017.

For its contribution to the overall result of the indicator, the following activities are noteworthy: Financial Intermediation, Insurance and Pension Funds, Post and Telecommunications, Trade; Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry and Fisheries, Private Construction, Hotels and Restaurants, and Electricity and Water, reported the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH).

The BCH document states that "... The Financial Intermediation, Insurance and Pension Funds reached a 6.1% growth (5.8% in the same period of 2018), as a result of higher interest and commissions on loans that favored the services of Financial Intermediation (6.3%), based on the credit portfolio for consumption, trade and real estate.

While the Insurance and Pension Funds activity increased 1.3%, because of the increase in income from the placement of premiums for group life insurance, accidents and diseases, and motor vehicles.

Private Construction continues to increase reflecting a 5.0% rate (4.8% in 2018), because of the increase in commercial buildings, warehouses and middle class housing, and also those for the provision of services and industrial, in the main cities of the country.

Because of the economic activity reported in the financial sector and the manufacturing industry, during September the IMAE registered a variation of 4% with respect to the same month in 2017.

The original IMAE series, accumulated up to September 2018, shows that the national production of goods and services (in volume terms) increased 3.7% (5.4% in 2017), outcome observed in the last three months.

Partially explained by the economic activity reported in the financial sector, during August of this year the IMAE registered a variation of 3.7% compared to the same month in 2017.

Up to the eighth month of the current year, according to the behavior of the original series of the IMAE, short term indicator of the productive activity of the country, increased by 3.7% (5.2% in 2017).

The economy registered a growth of 3.9%, mainly due to the performance of the sectors of Insurance and Pension Funds, Agriculture and Manufacturing.

In January 2015, the national economy, monitored through the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) in the original series, recorded annual change of 3.9% (1.8% in the same month in 2014).
