"Fibro" Textile Company Closes in Guatemala

The factory closed its doors on August 31, due to lack of orders from the United States.

110 workers lost their jobs with the closure of the plant, located on the 36th kilometers of the Interamerican Highway, in Sacatepéquez.

Vestex, the Guatemalan Textile and Apparel Commission, has reported the closure of 23 maquilas so far in 2009.

After 20 years of operation, Modas B.I. Apparel, a company specialized in the manufacture of clothing, decided to close its doors due to the economic crisis caused by the outbreak of covid-19.

The company operated an industrial plant that employed 800 workers and was located at Kilometer 8 of the Atlantic Highway, in the jurisdiction of the Department of Guatemala.

The American Aalfs Uno, which operated in the municipality of Sébaco, in Matagalpa, closed its operations in the country due to a reduction in the number of contracts.

The closure of the company was made official by directors of the Nicaraguan Association of Textiles and Apparel Industry (Anitec), who say it is the first company in the U.S. capital sector to close in the country.

Yarn Factory "Selim" Closes in Guatemala

"Selim Guatemala S.A." was one of the few producers of colored yarn in the country.

The company moved its Guatemalan operations to Singapore, which employed 100 people.

Alejandro Ceballos, president of Vestex, the Apparel and Textile Commission, told local newspaper 'El Periódico': "...the company had been looking for financing for a long time, but finally decided to relocate to Singapore".

Korean Businesspeople Abandon Guatemala

The impact of the economic crisis in the United States has had on the textile industry has forced 15 Korean businesses to shut down operations in the country.

Currently there are 158 factories in the country, of which 92 are Korean, 55 Guatemalan, 10 American, and 1 French, according to data from the Clothing and Textile Commission (Vestex).
