Costa Rica, Main Importer
In the first nine months of 2019 the main buyer in the region was Costa Rica, with $21.5 million, followed by Honduras with $6.7 million, El Salvador with $6.5 million, Panama and Guatemala with $8.3 million and Nicaragua with $3.6 million.

Regarding the year-on-year variation of purchases, two of the six countries registered decreases. In Nicaragua, imports fell by 7.24%, while in Honduras they fell by 14.73%.

El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama were the markets that recorded positive variations, reporting increases of 59%, 49%, 28% and 5%, respectively.

Regional Business Figures
Between January and September 2020 and the same period in 2021, the imported value of fiber optic cables in Central America increased by $10 million, growing from $45 million to $55 million.

For the periods in question, purchases from companies in the United States increased from $5.4 million to $9.2 million.

China, the Most Important Supplier
From January to September last year, 32% of the value of imports in the region came from China, 17% from the U.S., 16% from Mexico, 9% from Hong Kong and 7% from Spain.

China is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the period in question over the last ten years, since in 2012 it represented 6% of Central America's total purchases and in 2021 that proportion rose to 32%.

Fiber Optic Cables: Regional Purchases up 29%.

In the first semester of 2020, Central American countries imported $31 million in optical fiber cables, 29% more than what was reported in the same period of 2019, a rise that is explained by the behavior of purchases from Nicaragua, Panama, Guatemala and Costa Rica.
