Costa Rica, Main Importer
In the first nine months of 2019, the main buyer in the region was Costa Rica with $14 million, followed by Honduras with $8 million, Guatemala with $6 million, El Salvador with $5 million, Panama with $3.6 million and Nicaragua with $2.2 million.

Regarding the year-on-year change in purchases, three of the six countries registered declines. In Nicaragua, imports fell by 72%, while in Costa Rica and Panama they fell by 33% and 27%, respectively.

El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala were the markets that registered positive variations, reporting increases of 80%, 61% and 27%, respectively.

Regional Business Figures
Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value of optical fiber cables imported into Central America decreased by $8 million, falling from $46 million to $38 million.

In contrast to the general fall, for the periods in question, purchases from companies in Mexico increased considerably, from $5.4 million to $8.5 million.

China, the Most Important Supplier
From January to September last year, 27% of the value imported into the region came from China, 22% from Mexico, 15% from the USA and 7% from Spain.

China is the fastest growing import market for the period in question over the past eight years, representing 6% of total purchases in Central America in 2012, and in 2019 that proportion rose to 27%.
