Fertilizers: Purchases in 2018 up 6%

Last year, fertilizer purchases by countries in the region totaled $806 million, 6% more than what was reported in 2017, a rise explained by an increase in the average price of imports.

Variation in regional business
Between 2017 and 2018, the volume imported of fertilizers registered a 9% decrease, falling from 2.60 million tons to 2.35 million tons.

For the years concerned, the value imported increased by 6%, from $759 million in 2017 to $806 million in 2018.

Guatemala, main buyer
In 2018, the main importer of fertilizers in Central America was Guatemala with $202 million, followed by Costa Rica with $174 million, Honduras with $170 million, Nicaragua with $76 million, El Salvador with $73 million and Panama with $64 million.

Main sellers
From January to September 2018, 16% of the value imported from Central America was from Russia, 14% from China, 8% from the U.S. and 6% from Mexico.

Mexico is the market origin of imports that has grown the most in the last seven years, since in 2012 represented 3% of total purchases and in 2018 that proportion rose to 7%.

Price of Imported Fertilizers Continues to Fall

July 2018

The average price per kilo of fertilizers imported by the Central American countries dropped from $0.54 in January 2012 to $0.27 in March 2018, registering a 50% drop.

Fertilizers in Honduras: Purchases Recover in 2017

July 2018

After four years of registering reductions in purchases of fertilizer from abroad, in 2017 the country imported $146 million worth, 20% more than was reported in 2016.
