Fertilizers: Business between Central America and Mexico

In the first seven months of 2020, companies in the countries of the region imported fertilizers from Mexico for $27 million, 14% less than what was reported for the same period in 2019, a decrease that can be explained by the decrease in purchases by Guatemalan and Costa Rican companies.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In the first seven months of 2020, the main Central American buyer of fertilizers from Mexico continued to be Guatemala, with $24 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $1.2 million, Nicaragua, with $800,000, Honduras, with $700,000, Panama, with $300,000 and El Salvador, with just $100,000.

The information system details that from January to July of this year, imports of Honduran, Panamanian and Nicaraguan companies increased by 39%, 8% and 7%, respectively.

In the case of purchases from Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica, contractions of 14%, 37% and 44% were registered, in that order.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between the first seven months of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported registered a 14% decrease, from $31.5 million to $27 million.

The imported volume had a contrary behavior, since for the periods in question it rose from 76,933 tons to 78,812 tons, which is equivalent to a variation of 2%.

More Russian Fertilizers in Costa Rica

August 2018

In the first quarter of 2018, companies in the country imported $34 million worth of fertilizers, and purchases in Russia totaled $12 million, 45% more than in the same period in 2017.
