Fabrics: More Business between Dominican Republic and the U.S.

In the first four months of the year, Dominican exports of ready-made fabrics to the United States totaled nearly $240 million, 9% more than the same period in 2018.

This economic growth in the textile sector was influenced by exports of cotton T-shirts for men and boys, with a 29.7% increase, coats for women with 115% and synthetic fiber pants with 22.05%, reported the National Council of Export Processing Zones (CNZFE).

The statement states that "... According to information provided by the director of the CNZFE, Luisa Fernandez, growth in exports of textile garments to the United States exceeded US$240.4 million during the first quarter of the year.

At the end of 2018, the Clothing and Fabrics sector in the Dominican Republic registered growth of over US$1.1 billion in exports, with a total of 102 companies in operation, and continues to be one of the sectors that generates the greatest number of direct jobs in the Dominican economy, with an amount exceeding 41,000

Representatives of the Apparel and Textile Industry Association (Vestex) reported that they have recently reviewed the figures, and they estimate that this year the sector will have double-digit growth compared to 2017.

According to the textile industry union, half of the $2.6 billion exported in 2017 corresponded to pullover sweaters, cotton t-shirts, cotton briefs, synthetic fiber t-shirts and synthetic socks.

The Chamber of Textile, Clothing and Free Trade Zones of El Salvador (Camtex) reported that in 2017 the sector exported $2.617 million worth of clothes, $95 million more than was reported in 2016, which is equivalent to an interannual increase of 3.8%. 

Nicaragua Overcomes Loss of US Preferences for its Textiles

At the end of the first half of the year maquila textile exports to the United States grew by 13% compared to the same period in 2015.

Figures from the biannual report by the US Office of Textiles and Clothing (OTEXA) show that between January and June Nicaragua sold 255 million square meter equivalents (SME) to the United States generating revenues of $708 million.
