FTA Colombia – El Salvador Comes Into Effect

The Free Trade Agreement signed by both countries came into effect on Monday.

53% of Colombia’s industrial goods now benefit from zero tariffs when entering El Salvador.

“The agreement was signed as part of a wider trade treaty with the countries located in the northern part of Central America. Guatemala has already subscribed the agreement, and Honduras is the only one remaining”, reported business magazine América Economía.

FTA Doubles Trade Between Guatemala and Colombia

In the three years that the FTA has been in effect the trade balance favorable to Colombia increased from $251 million in 2009 to $527 million in 2012.

The nations of the Northern Triangle of Central America, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, have a free trade agreement with Colombia, whose enactment in 2010 produced immediate effects, rapidly increasing trade in goods and services between the FTA parties.

Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador will review the FTA they have with Colombia in order to making it better.

Since February, when the treaty came into effect, the countries of "Triángulo Norte" (union of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador) haven't got positive economical results and exports have been minimal.

The Free Trade Agreement between both countries has been in effect since last Saturday.

With Honduras, Colombia concludes an FTA with the ‘northern triangle’ (Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras). In November 2009, a Free Trade Agreement with Guatemala came into effect, and in Febraury the same happened with El Salvador.

Ruben Morales, Guatemalan Economy Minister, confirmed the Free Trade Agreement will come into effect on November 13th.

Next week, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe will visit Guatemala. During his visit, the presidents will exchange contracts for the coming into effect of the commercial treaty.
