FTA Between Panama and the United States

The new director of the Office of the United States Trade Representative said that it they are working to finalize an FTA with Panama.

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Ambassador Ron Kirk, director of the Office of the United States Trade Representative, at a hearing before the U.S. Congress, said that there was no secret in the fact that they have been working hard with the Government of Panama in recent weeks to address important issues so that the treaty can be sent to Congress for consideration.

Additionally, he said that there have been very productive discussions with Panamanian authorities on such topics as work and taxes.

The official said that while it is important not to overemphasize the benefits that a treaty between the United States and Panama would bring, they should not be minimized. He added that many Panamanian products already enjoy duty-free access to the United States, so the treaty would give reciprocal treatment to US products.
