Exports: Negotiating to Reduce Costs

In Costa Rica, exporters insist that rates be renegotiated at the Moin Container Terminal, since currently the cost of moving a container at that terminal exceeds by about $207 what was paid at the Japdeva docks.

The rates charged at the Moin Container Terminal (TCM) have been a matter of discussion for several months. When the maritime terminal was operating for one year, businessmen recognized that the efficiency of the premises had improved, but insisted that the rates should be reduced.

In December last year progress was reported, as it was announced that at the request of the Chamber of Exporters of Costa Rica (Cadexco), the Alvarado administration would begin negotiating with APM Terminals, a TCM concessionaire, a possible reduction in rates charged for loading and unloading of containers.

Nacion.com reviews that currently Rodolfo Mendez, Minister of Public Works and Transportation "... coordinates the commission that negotiates with APM Terminals the changes in the concession contract to operate TCM and taking into account with a central point an eventual reduction of tariffs."

Laura Bonilla, president of Cadexco said that "...'We have insisted that this tariff needs to be renegotiated. I believe that here we are commercial partners where we both win and it is extremely necessary that the President of the Republic meets with high ranking officials of APM and reaches a consensus tariff.'"

In the case of APM Terminals Moín, she assures that she is available to listen to any proposal from the Government that is consistent with the scope of the concession contract for the Moín Container Terminal.

Moin: One Year of Operation with High Rates

One year after the start-up of operations of the maritime terminal in Costa Rica, businessmen recognize that efficiency has improved, but insist that there should be a reduction in tariffs.

At the end of October 2018, the Moín Container Terminal was definitively received and immediately the seaport began to receive the first commercial ships.

Costa Rica - China Route: More Frequencies Managed

October 2019

Costa Rican exporters are negotiating to change the frequency of the maritime route between Port Moin and Shanghai from monthly to weekly from February 2020.

The service began last September 22, when the ship of China Ocean Shipping Company (Cosco), shipping company of the Chinese government, arrived at the Container Terminal of Moin, and left on September 23 after loading products such as pineapple, banana, meat and orange juice.

Diversifying In Order to Survive

The operator of the port of Limón in Costa Rica, is seeking to diversify its business focusing on conventional cargo handling, in order to compensate for the losses it will face when APM Terminals 's container port comes into operation.

Serving as port of departure for more Nicaraguan exporters and transporting more iron and vehicles are two of the objectives that make up the strategy envisioned by Japdeva, the concessionaire of the port of Moín, in Limón, which they intend to follow over the next few years.
