Environmental Studies for Grand Canal of Nicaragua

The Government and Chinese companies responsible for analyzing the environmental viability of the project have made presentations private on the partial developments.

Environmental Resource Management (ERM) and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) submitted to the Technical Advisory Committee of the Grand Canal, and without allowing access to journalists - the progress of the environmental studies for the construction of the inter-oceanic canal.

They presented "progress in areas of the territory under study and the types of activities in terms of hydrology, soil studies, studies of water quality, flora and fauna," said Kamilo Lara, environmentalist and member of the commission.

For his part, José Adán Aguerri, president of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (Cosep) and also a member of the commission, confirmed that in mid-December HKND Group will release the final route of the Grand Canal, despite environmental studies concluding in 2014.

The consortium formed by the Nicaraguan Llansa Ingenieros, NAP Ingenieros y Nicaragua Ingenieros S.A has been subcontracted by HKND for preliminary works.

Elnuevodiario.com.ni reports that "...The works which began on December 22 consist of the construction of five temporary access roads, improving two existing access roads near port Brito and the West Lock proposed for the Canal, the clearing of a strip of 50 meters along the center line of the proposed route for the Canal and auxiliary facilities. "

Private Sector Representatives in Grand Canal Project

Business leaders will form part of the technical committee of advisers to the Grand Canal Megaproject in Nicaragua.  

Joseph Adam Aguerri, president of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (Cosep) and Benjamin Lanzas, chief of the Nicaraguan Chamber of Construction were chosen by the board of Cosep as their representatives to the committee.

Conference on Nicaraguan Inter-Oceanic Canal

August 2013

AmCham Nicaragua has announced that representatives of the company HKND, concessionaire of the project, will hold a conference on August 13.

The activity, organized by the Nicaraguan American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), will include the participation of HKND Group spokesman Ronald MacLean-Abaroa and Alberto Vega, a representative from Environmental Resources Management (ERN), the firm responsible for the environmental impact studies.
