Energy Projects in Panama

There are dozens of large and small power generation projects in various stages of implementation that run parallel with the growth of energy demand.

The list of energy projects is led by the Chan II hydroelectric station which is expected generate 220 MW and will begin operations in 2019. It is followed by 13 independent hydroelectric projects that are already under construction and which together will add 200 MW to the system from 2014 to 2015.

"The latest report by the National Authority of Public Services (ASEP), dated March 25, describes 27 hydroelectric projects in the final design stage ... it also reports 39 concessions procedures for small hydropower plants with capacity of 5 MW. "

"In terms of thermal generation there are eight final licenses, including the one obtained the company Panama NG Power, which should generate 670 MW using natural gas from 2017. In the renewable energy category there are 43 licenses, between the final and interim stages, for wind and solar projects. Until the end of 2013 the installed capacity in the country was was 2,448 MW, of which 61% is from hydroelectric sources."

Costa Rica: 28 Companies Offering Electricity

In the tender process for up to 200 megawatts (MW), the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad has received twenty-eight offers from companies including 15 hydroelectric and 13 wind generation projects.

Gilbert de la Cruz, director of the Institute of Planning said " the technical documentation is currently being reviewed and rated.

Guatemala: Tender for 800MW Attracts Investors

At least 10 companies have already acquired the bidding rules ready to present bids on 28 October.

Among the companies interested in bidding is Centrans Energy which operates a wind farm in the Pacaya volcano area, which generates 50 MW and represents an investment of $125 million.
