Central American Companies Purchase More
Between the first nine months of 2018 and the same period in 2019, the total value of electric motors and generators imported into Central America registered a 35% decrease, falling from $195 million to $127 million.

Two of the six countries recorded year-on-year increases in purchases. In Honduras, imports increased 145%, while in Panama the increase was 28%.

Costa Rica and Guatemala registered negative variations, which amounted to -15% and -40%, respectively. In the case of Nicaragua, the contraction in imports was 56% and in El Salvador it was 62%.

El Salvador, Main Importer
From January to September 2019 the main buyer of electric motors and generators in Central America was El Salvador, with $43 million, followed by Honduras, with $26 million, Panama, with $20 million, Guatemala, with $19 million, Costa Rica, with $16 million, and Nicaragua, with $3 million.

Top Suppliers
As of September 2019, 25% of the value imported from Central America came from Spain, 19% from the USA, 13% from China, 13% from France, 10% from Germany, 4% from Mexico and 3% from Brazil.

Spain is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question in the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 11% of the total value purchased and in 2019 it reached 25%.

In the current context of the health crisis, according to forecasts by CentralAmericaData, if quarantine and mobility restriction measures are extended by two months, it is predicted that by the end of the year the annualized demand for repair and maintenance services for machinery and industrial equipment in Central America will have fallen by 5%.

From January to September 2018, imports of electric motors and generators totaled $195 million, 80% more than in the same period in 2017, because of purchases from El Salvador from Spanish companies.

In 2017, purchases of electric motors and generators from Central American countries totaled $152 million, which represents an increase of 3% compared to the previous year.
