Central American companies buy less
Between January-September 2019 and the same period in 2020, the total imported value of electric motors and generators in Central America registered a 42% decrease by dropping from $127 million to $73 million.

Two of the six countries recorded year-on-year increases in their purchases. Imports increased 100% in Nicaragua and 8% in Guatemala.

In the other countries, imports declined. In Costa Rica they fell 9%, in Panama 54%, in Honduras 64% and in El Salvador 67%.

Guatemala, Main Importer
From January to September 2020, the main buyer of electric motors and generators in Central America was Guatemala, with $20 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $15 million, El Salvador, with $14 million, Honduras, with $9 million, Panama, with $9 million and Nicaragua, with $6 million.

USA, the Most Important Supplier
As of September 2020, 29% of the value imported from Central America came from the USA, 20% from China, 11% from Spain, 6% from Mexico, 5% from Brazil, 4% from Germany, 3% from Italy and 3% from Taiwan.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 3% of the total value purchased and in 2020 it reached 20%.

April 2019

From January to September 2018, imports of electric motors and generators totaled $195 million, 80% more than in the same period in 2017, because of purchases from El Salvador from Spanish companies.

Central America Buys More Electric Generators

May 2018

In 2017, purchases of electric motors and generators from Central American countries totaled $152 million, which represents an increase of 3% compared to the previous year.
