Electoral Process Is Losing Democratic Viability

After the arrest of presidential pre-candidates Cristiana Chamorro and Arturo Cruz in Nicaragua, the business sector questions the "democratic viability of a free, fair, competitive and transparent electoral process".

Monday, June 7, 2021

After the Public Prosecutor's Office issued an accusation against Cristiana Maria Chamorro Barrios, the authorities ordered a search and seizure warrant against the presidential pre-candidate.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the formal accusation against Chamorro was made for "abusive management, ideological falsehood, both in real competition with money laundering, goods and assets". Previously, the authorities had ordered the suspension of Chamorro's bank accounts.

Chamorro is currently under house arrest.

The judicial actions against presidential pre-candidates have not stopped there, since last June 5 the authorities informed that Arturo Jose Cruz Sequeira was arrested by the National Police.

According to the official statement, Cruz has strong indications that he has "attempted against the Nicaraguan society and the rights of the people, in accordance with Law No. 1055 'Law for the defense of the rights of the people to independence, sovereignty and self-determination for peace', for which reason, within the terms of the law, he will be presented before the competent judicial authority."

For the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (COSEP), the last events against opponents and the recent police arrest and announced criminal investigation against pre-candidate Cruz, bring into question the democratic viability of the realization of a free, fair, competitive and transparent electoral process.

The document highlights that "... the authorities with these actions are plunging the country into a much deeper political crisis with consequences that erode peace, economic and social stability, which will affect the present and future of the country."
