El Salvador's coffee season starts low

The volume and income from coffee exports in October, the first month of the 2008-2009 coffee season, are down 28.9% and 16.1 % respectively.

The Salvadoran coffee Council reported that during the first month of the new coffee export season income from foreign sales of 35,546 hundredweight (46 kilograms each) of coffee totalled 5.2million dollars.

Salvadoran coffee exports increase 10.9%

During the first quarter of the 2008-2009 coffee year, export grew 10.9% in value and 2.2% in volume, compared to the same period in the previous cycle.

Elsalvador.com reports on its website "Earnings for the same period also increased 10.9%, from 20,540,546 dollars to 22,769,117 dollars, said CSC.

Income from coffee went up by 44.2% in July, when compared to the same month in 2007, the Salvadoran Coffee Board reported.

According to preliminary reports from the Board, El Salvador exported 151,258 sacks in comparison to 123,493 sacks in July 2007. A sack is equivalent to 45.3 kilograms.

Exports of coffee from El Salvador rose by 29 percent in May, compared with the same period in 2007.

Revenues increased by 46 percent, reflecting higher world prices, the El Salvador Coffee Board said.
In May of this year El Salvador exported 241,060 quintals of coffee, compared with 187,298 quintals last year. A quintal is equivalent to about 46 kilograms or about 100 pounds.

El Salvador seeks to sell coffee in Europe

El Salvador's coffee producers hope to open new markets in Europe for high-quality coffee under the trade association now under negotiation between Brussels and Central America.

"The association agreement is a major market opportunity for our coffee. Germany is already a customer but we want to expand sales to other European nations too," said Ricardo Espitia, executive director of the Salvadoran Coffee Council.
