El Salvador: Lighting Tender

A concession for an electrical lighting service in the capital, San Salvador, will relieve the finances of the municipality.

Monday, July 18, 2011

In order to reduce the electricity bill by way of street lights, the Municipality of San Salvador has decided to put out to tender the implementation of a new urban lighting plan, which more than twenty companies are interested in.

If successful the plan proposed by Mayor Norman Quijano could mean a saving of over 50% in the annual bill.

An article in Laprensagrafica.com reports that the mayor has estimated that with the implementation of the lighting concession the city's monthly bill would drop to between "$130,000 or $140,000, with the savings being used to pay the bill for lighting project.

The focus of the project is to change the lighting to use LED technology, which counts among its benefits the reduction of energy consumption.

This technology has already been tested in pilot projects in the municipality of Santa Ana, earlier this year.

The concession, according to the mayor of San Salvador, will last "most likely for 20 years," and that once the bidding process is complete, the project will be up and running in October. "
