El Salvador and the Dairy Market

Although exports of dairy products have grown in the last two years, producers say that local production and domestic consumption have stagnated.

Tuesday, July 10, 2018

The Central Reserve Bank recorded record figures in the export of dairy products during the past year, adding up to $30 million, and in the first five months of 2018 sales abroad already add up to $12 million.

In regards to consumption behavior, Alfonso Escobar, president of the Association of Milk Producers of El Salvador (Proleche), told Elmundo.sv that " ... the increase in exports has not translated into an increase in demand for local milk, although he pointed out that good figures 'give good hope and then we have to see what we can do to be part of that success'."

For his part Federico Colorado, president of the Salvadoran Association of Livestock and Industrial Milk (Asileche), explained that " ... although 'we have stagnation in the production of milk', elements such as diversification and conquest of markets have influenced the behavior of exports.

According to the report "Central American Trade in Milk and Dairy Products" prepared by the Business Intelligence Unit at CentralAmericaData, between 2016 and 2017, Salvadoran dairy products sales to the other countries in the region grew from $20 million to $23 million. In the last year, 74% of the amount of intraregional exports went to Guatemala.
