El Salvador: Telecoms Incur Fines for Anticompetitive Practices

Digicel, Telefonica Moviles El Salvador, CTE, CTE Telecom Personal and Telemóvil El Salvador filed appeals against the $2.2 million fine imposed on them for abuse of their dominant positions.

From a statement issued by the Superintendency of Competition:

The five telephone operators punished for abusing their dominant position submitted an appeal to the Board of Directors of the Superintendency of Competition on 4 November. The telecoms companies protested against the decision and requested a modification or rescindment of all of the resolution.

After almost two years of investigating and collecting evidence to resolve complaints filed in October 2013 by Platinum Enterprises, SA de CV, the Board of Directors of the Superintendency of Competition fined the operators Digicel, SA de CV, Telefonica Moviles El Salvador, SA de CV, Compañía de Telecomunicaciones de El Salvador, SA de CV (CTE SA de CV), CTE Telecom Personal SA de CV, and Telemóvil El Salvador, SA de CV, with fines for each of them, that total around $2.2 million, and ordered a series of mandatory measures for the purposes of ensuring the immediate cessation of proven anti-competitive practices.
