El Salvador Restricts Pork Imports from Guatemala

The measure announced by the Salvadoran government applies to the import of live pigs, meat and meat products.

From a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance of El Salvador:

The prohibition of the importation of pigs from Guatemala is being maintained

The Directorate General of Livestock, at the Ministry of Agriculture reports that the restriction on the import of live pigs will be maintained, as well as fresh, cured, frozen meat, semen or other genetic material of porcine origin, from Guatemala.

According to the agency the prohibition remains in place because the neighboring country has been unable to establish sanitary status which is equivalent or equal to that of El Salvador in relation to classical swine fever.

Swine Fever: Contingency Plan Activated

In response to alerts of African Swine Fever cases reported in Asia, authorities in El Salvador reported that they will carry out fumigations on air, land and sea transportation coming from the affected countries.

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) alerted the countries of the region at the end of June to strengthen animal health controls and public and private veterinary services in the member states to prevent the recurrence of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the region.

In 2011, countries in the region imposed restrictions on the entry of pork from Guatemala, after detecting the presence of Classical Swine Fever. Now, Guatemalan pork producers are preparing to resume sales in the coming months.

Japan Consuming More Imported Pork

The outbreak of swine diarrhea which affected the pork cultivation sector has led to a greater consumer preference for imported meat.

Japan is the largest importer of pork in the world, the fifth of pork sausages and sixth largest consumer of pork.

El Salvador Bans Entry of Guatemalan Pork

The Salvadoran Ministry of Livestock has closed the borders to Guatemalan pork due to an outbreak of classical swine fever in that country.

The ban also applies to pork products and pork byproducts, said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in El Salvador.
