El Salvador: Prospects for the Cruise Season

Following a slight rebound in 2016, the arrival of ten cruisers from six foreign companies is expected in the 2017 season, with about 5,000 tourists on board.

Tuesday, April 11, 2017

In 2015 tourism authorities reported the arrival of 5 cruise ships during the season, a slight improvement compared to the figures of previous years, particularly the years 2013, 2014 and 2015, in which only one cruise was recorded each season.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, a new strategy is being implemented to promote the arrival of more cruise ships to Salvadorans ports. Michelle Treminio, coordinator of the Reception of Cruise Ships in El Salvador, "... said 'work is being done continuously on trade relations with shipping lines'. These firms may be in the US and Europe, but 'we want them to go through the pacífic coast'."

Elmundo.sv explains that "...In order to generate international demand, José Napoleón Duarte, head of the ministry, reported that since coming to Mitur a tourism model has been created focusing on attracting cruise ships. The venture includes securing four areas: logistics infrastructure, tourism, improving national parks and promotion. Under this scheme work has been done 'from Mexico to Panama, to offer ourselves as a region and encourage boats to stop in El Salvador,' said Treminio."
