El Salvador: Proposal to Ban Plastic Bags

The proposed law presented in the Legislative Assembly establishes a period of one year for companies to replace the use of plastic bags with articles of other materials.

The proposal to replace in the country the use of plastic bags made of polyethylene or conventional plastic with articles made of other materials, was presented by Representative Milena Mayorga from the party Arena.

The legislator explained to Laprensagrafica.com.com that "... Companies would have at least one year to change plastic for an environmentally friendly or easily degradable material."

Mayorga added that "... Climate change and its effects are a reality that affects all countries, for this reason El Salvador should not lag behind in taking actions that contribute to protecting the planet, urgently reduce the consumption of plastic and create a new environmental culture."

Plastic Bags: Ban Applies in Panama

After the law banning the use of polyethylene bags in supermarkets, grocery stores, pharmacies and other retail stores came into force in the country on July 20, the businessmen say the restriction should be applied gradually.

18 months after the new law was published in the Gaceta Oficial, it entered into force for retail establishments, but, in the case of wholesalers, the use of free polyethylene bags will be implemented from January 20, 2020, considering that the norm establishes a 24-month period from the enactment of the law. Industrialists Against Ban on Plastic Use

July 2019

In El Salvador, the industrialists' guild asked the Legislative Assembly to be taken into account in the discussion on the prohibition of plastic in the country, since they believe it is convenient to regulate its use, but not to restrict it.

After in October 2018, a bill was presented to the Legislative Assembly (still under discussion) that establishes a one-year deadline for companies to replace the use of plastic bags by articles of other materials, directors of the Salvadoran Association of Industrialists (ASI), ask to be taken into account in the process.

Plastic Bags Prohibition: New Requirements

April 2019

In Panama, rules were established for both manufacturers and importers to ensure that there is no polyethylene in the bags used in the country.

At the beginning of 2018, a law was passed prohibiting the use of polyethylene bags in supermarkets, self-service stores, warehouses or shops in general for the transport of products or goods, a restriction that will enter into force on July 19 of this year.

Plastic Bags Banned in Panama

August 2017

The Assembly has approved a law prohibiting the delivery of disposable and non-biodegradable plastic bags to end consumers in supermarkets and commercial establishments.

From a statement issued by the National Assembly of Panama:

The proposal is that establishments will proceed with the progressive replacement of prohibited bags, exchanging them for containers made of non-polluting materials or reusable plastic, within the following 12-month periods, from the enactment of this law, for supermarkets, pharmacies and retailers; and within 24 months for warehouses and wholesalers.
