El Salvador: Processed Meat Imports Up 7%

From January to September 2017, El Salvador bought $21 million worth of processed meat from abroad, 7% more than what was purchased during the same period in 2016.

Changes in imports  
Between January and September of the years 2016 and 2017 the import volume of processed meat registered an increase of 8%, rising from 7,000 tons in 2016 to 8,000 tons in 2017.

For the periods in question, the import value also recorded growth, rising from $19 million in 2016 to $21 million in 2017.

From January to September of the years between 2013 and 2017, the value of Salvadoran purchases abroad grew steadily reaching an annual average of 11%. 

Origin of imports 
From January to September 2017, 70% of the value imported from El Salvador originated in Guatemala, 15% in Mexico, 8% in the US, 5% in Costa Rica and 1% in Spain. 

Price of imports
Between October 2012 and September 2017, the average price of kilo of processed meat imports fell 23%, going from $3.22 to $2.48.
